Changes in American Eating Patterns · Family meals at home are being replaces by quick stop , eat on the go places. · On an average Americans dine out 6 times per week or 1 out of 3 meals. Advantages to a home cooked meal: · Consume less calories and fat, and eat more fruit, vegetables, whole grain and calcium. · Smaller portions · Tend not to skip meals, like breakfast. (Skipping breakfast is troublesome because overnight the body used carbohydrate storages and therefore not eating breakfast could make a person sluggish in the mid morning. Also a healthy breakfast including high fiber can help with weight maintenance. Snacking: · Refers to food consumed between the 3 main meals. · Most Americans have at least one snack per day and snack foods contribute to 21-25% of the daily caloric intake. · Snacking is neither good nor bad. · The issue is not WHEN something is eaten but WHAT. · Problems occur when the persons diet is consumed by low nutrient dense foods. · The average meal of a cheeseburger, milk shake and fries are babout 1500 cal. Or 43% of a persons recommended allowance. Eating fast food does not have to be bad……so an occasional meal at a fast food chain does not have to compromise a well balance diet..
