Nicotine is an addictive substance and an alkaloid poison. It affects the body by increasing the heart and respiratory rates, elevating blood pressure, increasing cardiac output and oxygen consumption, and constricting bronchi (The two main branches of the trachea that lead to the lungs) Advantages of quitting: Immediately: The air around you is no longer dangerous to children and adults. 20 minutes: Your blood pressure improves. Your pulse rate decreases. The temperature of your feet and hands increases to normal levels. 12 hours: Your bodys carbon monoxide level starts to decrease 24 hours: Your chance for heart attack decreases 36 hours: The carbon monoxide in your blood decreases to healthier levels.
